A question
I hadn’t prepared for.
The question appeared out of nowhere. We were in the car, driving home from school, when one of my kids asked, “Dad… are we rich?”
His voice had no accusation, just quiet curiosity. He had overheard something at school (maybe a comment from another kid about our cook, or where we live), and now he wondered: Are we different? Are we rich?
I don’t remember exactly what I said at that moment. Probably something vague, gentle, possibly evasive. Not because I wanted to hide anything, but because I didn’t know what he was really searching for.
Was he asking about bank accounts? About fairness? About whether it’s ok to have more than others? That’s when I realized: I didn’t have a plan for this.
